In Her Own Words

About her

A bookish Londoner and committed European, with a thing about the sea. Empathetic, intelligent, cheeky and affectionate, I am equally at home in city galleries and libraries or in a tent in the wilds. I practically had to have a full personality transplant to join this site but have met a few genuinely nice men over the last couple of years: proof that connections can happen.

Like many of us here, there has been some re-modelling in recent years (not in the plastics department, you understand!). Now working as a lecturer in 20th century art history and managing on the whole to take myself seriously, with the occasional wry smile at my late ambition and the numerous pitfalls … . I recently granted myself a six-week sabbatical in Berlin, where I found a welcome sense of renewed independence and possibility. You notice things more acutely when in a new environment and that itself can have a creative effect.

I’m a total nature-lover who knows the thrill of plunging feet in an icy stream after a mountain walk. Am fit but no gym bunny: apart from sailing and summer swimming, it took a long time for me to recognise that well-being is not only to be found in the next improving book! Now, I find regular yoga helps to keep mind and body in balance and I have taken to open-water swimming, where I am in my element. Otherwise, I am also a dedicated cook, experienced gardener, novice guitar player, occasional creative writer.

I like radio: current affairs, comedy on R3, 4 ,6. Though I’m more comfortable discussing books and films than music, here’s half an alphabet of recent listening: Bach, Beethoven, Benjamin Britten, Blik Bassy, Nils Frahm, Phillip Glass, Handel, Abdullah Ibrahim, Cassandra Jenkins, Angelique Kidjo, John Martyn, Agnes Obel … . Exhibitions that have impressed me lately include Louise Bourgeois at the Hayward Gallery, Post-war Modern at the Barbican and in the town of Bremen, the tragically sublime photographs of Richard Mosse.

About her ideal match

Plenty of fish? Piranhas and flounders need not apply :) Other than that, if you are a kind, open-minded grown-up who is in tune with the outdoors and can tolerate an art gallery, then it would be nice to get to know you.

I am told most men look at the first photograph and move on, so if you have read this far then I'm inclined to like you already 😉 I guess I am quite demanding of life and would like to find someone on my wavelength; to feel at ease but also to dare a little. Self-awareness, a youthful outlook and a good sense of humour are the most important attributes to me. It adds to the appeal if you can articulate something meaningful about why you are here.
