About her
I'm a writer, mainly of novels but also opera libretti, a few poems, drama for television, and short fiction, and I have a job I love in academia. Literature, music, theatre, art, Europe, cities, landscapes, opera, politics - and conversations about the lot of them, and lots besides - are my life's essentials. But no less important are my friends around my table, walks, markets, great coffee, utterly silly jokes, wit, satire, and above all being the mother of a wonderful grownup daughter. I'm pretty high energy without being frenetic: the right fuel for me is a mixture of curiosity and sympathy, and I have an innate capacity for delight, wherever it lurks, in great or small things. It's all about range.

Assuming that "words, words, words" would be your as well as Hamlet's answer to the question "What do you read?", I hope it'd be a lot of them, on whatever subjects. I'd like to meet a reader and talker, who may or may not write but will certainly think. I'd be happy to make space in my life for someone open, wise and generous in spirit. Funny would be great. Whatever your tastes in books, theatre, music, cinema or anything else, they'll go beyond escapism, at least some of the time. You won't be chasing after lost youth but even less will you have a notion of settling down for old age. In fact, 'old' won't mean all that much because, like me, you won't be able to imagine a limit on what might yet intrigue and delight you in this world.
